In 1884 Michael Marks opened a stall at an open-air market in Leeds. Ten years later he formed a partnership with Tom Spencer, and Marks & Spencer was born. Today the company has more than 400 stores in the U.K. (including its flagship at Marble Arch, London) and another 150 worldwide. Its online store, launched in 1999, carries apparel for men, women and children, electronics, home products, furniture, gifts, flowers and wine. You can also purchase gift vouchers. Returns: Any clothing or home furnishing item can be returned for a refund within 90 days of receipt by post or to any Marks & Spencer store, as long as it is unused, in its original packaging and in resaleable condition. Unless the product is defective, Marks & Spencer does not accept returns of toiletries, cosmetics, bra accessories, earrings for pierced ears and any duvet or pillow product once opened. It also does not offer refunds for digital cameras, printers, digital TV set-top boxes, mobile phones and digital radios once the box has been opened, unless defective. Shipping: £3.50 per order, with the exception of wine, which is £5 per case, and gift vouchers, which are £2.95 per order. Marks & Spencer offers free delivery on furniture, beds and upholstery. Gift wrap is £5 per order.
